Briggs & Straton White Smoke

04/11/2010 7:22 AM

I recently gave my 6hp mower a "tune-up" (plug, air filter, oil change, gas stabilizer) after a few years of poor performance. It starts and runs great, however, there is occassional white smoke. Is this something I should worry about? Is this a result of the gas stabilizer?

Did it smoke before you "fixed" it? To rule out gas stabilizer, drain the gas tank and refill with non-stabilized fuel.

Does it smoke on start-up, or randomly?

If it were a car, I'd tell you to turn the radio up and ignore it.

hey thingy, you forgot to ask if this is 2 or 4 cycle...

Could just be bad mix and color bias of observer- blue smoke = white smoke in bright sun.

Oh, Grasshopper,

You cannot change the oil of a two stroke cycle machine. It is in the gas tank.

" (plug, air filter, oil change, gas stabilizer)"

This is a four stroke. I don't think B&S makes a two stroke.

Here's some smileys for ya:

I cut my grass today. It was more work than normal. Normally, I cut it once a week. We've had an ideal spring here in the desert. Now, it's twice a week. But not for long.

Cheers.

Ahhh! No oil in the 2 stroke. I missed the significance of that oil change statement. I have 2 cycle snow blower (Add oil to gas)and 4 stroke Mower (add oil to crankcase.)

Just checked, snow blower is tecumseh.

Mower is B&S. I thought they was both B&S. Thanks for the smileys.

Snow blower? Doesn't snow blow all by itself?

Is it possible that this person lives near the Vatican?

If that is the case, perhaps it has something to do with the Pope.

Seems like white smoke is a sign that it is running a little lean at the times it puts that out. If it is only occasional, I'd not worry much about it, though it may be a sign at the time that the engine is running a bit hotter. Long as it has oil in it it will probably be ok. I suspect that the white smoke appears when the machine is at an incline, or you hit a high patch of grass, and push on.

Another factor may be moisture in the air. A little more info may well be of aid, such as at what attitude of incline the machine is most likely to produce the white smoke, and temperatures, and humidity.

I would have thought being a 6hp Briggs & Stratton it would be 4 stroke.

I would suspect that the "stabiliser" or the fuel your using may be the culprit.

Kranky Kev my local mower repairman, tells anyone that stands still long enough, not to use stale fuel and stay away from E10 in their mowers/weedwackers.

That you should drain and remove the fuel from the tank when you have finished using it everytime.

That you should use fresh fuel everytime you use your mower/weedwacker.

Petrol doesn't store like it used to and E10 petrol has an even shorter life span.

Since I started using Kranky Kev's advice I've not had any dramas with my mowers and weed wackers.

The other pointer is are you "using/burning" any oil out of the sump? This might indicate worn rings or valve guides, potentially a call for an overhaul.

Based on your statement "It starts and runs great, however, there is occasional white smoke" I would have to say blown head gasket between the valve section and piston chamber.

This happened with my 17HP single piston B&S: It started and ran fine. While running, there would be occasional puffs of white smoke lasting for around 2 to 4 seconds.

You can do a compression test to determine if this is the case with your engine. I don't know what the specs are for a 6HP but you should be able to find it on-line somewhere.

Hope this helps.

Funny replies sometimes eh.?

Lets assume your Briggs/Stratton 6hp is NOT a 2 stroke .!!!

Lets also assume that according to your post , you have included the gas stabilizer as a part of your tune up.?

If this is true , you are simply seeing the stabilizer burning off.

I applaud your tune up as most small engines never see one .

Re : gas stabilizer ... gas goes bad after three months storage.

Read what it says on the container and use it for long term gas storage only.

Most people own 3 to 5 small engines but dont realise they need the same maintenance as the car they drive every day.!

One guy i met found it strange that his $2500.00 riding lawnmower quit because he never put any oil in it , he thought they ran with only gas refills and would last for about ten years .?

Last for 10 years.

I sold steel to a lawn mower company. I visited their plant one day and saw their "test track" for riding lawn mowers.

Cables to tether it to a pole. like staking out a dog. Hour meter. Just let it run circles. If it made 600 hours (ten years life) the new design was good to go. They said 60 hours = 1 year of use to most customers.
