1999 Ford Explorer Front End Squeaks

04/10/2010 6:36 PM

What is the reason for the squeaking front end? A dry bearing? How can I repair and or stop the squeaking? My vehicle is a 1999 Ford Explorer 6 Cylinder 4WD 245 E 4.0L EFI SOHC.

I dry bearing will make a growling noise.

It is probably going to be a ball joint. but you do need to give us more information here.

It could be a rat, a mouse, hell it might be my old girl friend. If it turns out to be a 60 year old woman named Jackie, Tell her I said hi. (don't tell her how to get a hold of me)

1) I never touched her sister. What did she tell you? If she don't have no pictures, it's a lie!

2) That is how rumors get started.

And for the return to topic post (before we scare him away).

I don't recall the vehicle but it is probably the same one a buddy of mine had. Every time he went up the slight slope through the gutter into his driveway it would make a loud squeak as the suspension compressed. We determined it was a bushing that was making the offending noise.

We tried W-D 40, and it was quiet for a day or so and in the end, I think he changed to nylon bushings.

when you are turning?

going straight?

Stopping?

Hitting the gas?

When and exactly how does it squeak.. squeal or growl.. or is it a combination?

brakes, bearings, or ball joints.

..the serpentine drive belt tension pulley is also a hot one..

Well above is a lot of information.

Some good but the most Useful is the Black Mail opportunity we all have on Bob now.

Is it a squeak from the brake wear indicators?

Without any specific info. such as when and where this offending squeek occures . We are again left to try to figure things out by asking more questions and taking more time and on and on it goes .

If your 99 Explorer is squeeking during normal driving over bumps etc. and not when turning corners , then you can be sure the rubber C.V. joint boots are ok .

That leaves only the shocks or pivot points to be the culptrits . Fords are famous for squeeky pivot joints .

Spray all pivot points with a rubber bushing in them with SILICONE spray , not WD40 !

This includes all A arms and shock mounts .

Do this every week for a month ! To let the silicone actually get into the tight fittings.

Let us know how you do .

Correct, silicone spray is what I would suggest too. At the time that is all we had, and his solution was to change the bushings.

I have learned since that silicone refreshes all kinds of foam and door seals on my vehicles.

Sorry it took so long to respond. The truck has had new shocks installed with no change. The squeaking occurs as the wheels are turned whether driving or not. Going over bumps without turning the wheels makes it squeak. It is just squeaks no growls or grinding. I tried the Kroil spray on the bushings and any moving front end parts I could see and reach. It does seem that when it rains the squeaking is less. But still there. The brakes are good I did a brake job just last month. I don't have air suspension. No rats no old girlfriends. I believe it is the pivot points as stated by Machine Head. I haven't tried the silicone yet so I will do that. I must say that I'm glad you guys had fun with this one. We all need a little more humor in our lives. Thanks.

Based on the fact that it squeaks when the wheels are turned, plus when you hit bumps suggests to me the ball joints, or outer tie rod ends. Have you had your front end checked for play?

as well as all the other suggestions try the track rod ends or the other end of theses the swivel joints in the steering rack it self, when you spray joints if noise is still there try spraying around where the steering rack is attached to the body it may be loose there, But spray each part in turn so you can isolate the location.

Hope all goes well.Thanks. P.S. i'm a 29 year old female and I'm never sure on machanical probloms..

Check back and let us know if it works. If not, we can try to troubleshoot further.

Have someone check your ball joints. I had a '95 5L Ford product and had a squeak for several years. I was really convinced that it was the strut until one day the wheel decided to go one way and the vehicle another. Lucky I was going real slow.

Good Luck.
