How to Separate Al and Cu?

04/11/2010 8:47 AM

Hi,

I am running a small recycling company in China.

As I know, the density of Al is much lower than Cu,

So, is there any machine that can separate Al and Cu effectively?

Thanks

I know by using eddy cuddent can separate non metal and metal,

but what I mean is separating Al and Cu from their mixture.

when you mixture do you mean in copper and aluminum alloy form?

or powders or fragments mixed up.

You can work out a gravity separator, where copper sinks down and aluminium floats.

In a liquid that has the correct density too, or one that you help with upwards directed force.

Or probably also with centrifugal forces. It all depends on volumes, weights, contamination, conduct (e.g.hooking into each other?) color and sizes.

In general, you need to find analogies between your aluminum and the same goes for your copper.

Can you chip everything to about the same size? You could then e.g blow the aluminium upwards onto a different sorting belt?

You know your operation

Separating ideas are in function of discrepancies of aluminium towards your copper scrap.

When melting them, they will separate too at different temperatures, but this needs a lot of energy. Just some thoughts.

should replace gravity by density

what form is the aluminium and copper? If they are filings or similar small bits, you can use a high density liquid in which copper sinks and alumium floats. Larger pieces can be hand sorted. Both are good condustors, so eddy current methods will not work unless they are all the same size.

you might look at many pages of this link, one might be buried in there.

Wash the mixture of Cu+Al in sodium hydroxide solution to dissolve aluminum particles leaving more precious copper intact.

Aluminium and sodium hydroxide react to form sodium aluminate, which reaction is highly exothermic!

Hi Guest,

Al melts at 660*C and Cu around 1085*C. Heat the alloy, piece or powder to at least 660*C or little bit higher, and you will get Al liquid, scoop out the rest. This way we have pure Al and we can get Cu to.

This is and idea, test, approve, and do it, Gil.

NB: I used Deming's "P"lan"D"o"S"tudy"A"ct as hidden as possible but still works.

Thank you all!

I have to apologize that I haven't describe my condition well enough.

I have Imported some air-con radiators and they have been sharded into piece(3mm-40mm).

Melting the aluminiun should be work, but also using lots of power.

I am thinking of putting the mixture on a eddy current separator. As Al has a lower density, will it fall further and Cu fall closer?

3mm - 40mm is a tight range of shred particle sizes.

I am used to using vibrating inclined screens and conveyors on ores but for what you are talking about this should do it.

This paper gives you the trajectory calculations:
