How to Select Indoor Outdoor Joint Kit

04/12/2010 6:17 AM

Dear,

We have 11000 volt supply for 200 kva transformer. Now we are planning to change transformer with 750 KVA. But we are not going to change our HT cable which is 3 Core 50 sqmm XLPE cable.

I want to know that if we are required to change Outdoor kit of cable for fixing it with transformer. We have dual pole GODO switch connected with 200 KVA transformer and we are planning to put as it is. So if we require to change the Outdoor joint Kit of cable or not.

Thanks

If I am reading and interpreting your question correctly, it sounds like you are replacing a 200 KVA transformer with a 750 KVA transformer.

The 200 KVA transformer is presently fed by a 3 core 50 Sqmm cable which when converted to AWG comes out right between a #1 and a 1/0 cable.

#1, 15KV cable will carry 130 amps.

The max current on the primary side of the 750KVA is 40 amps (@11,000V)

Theoretically, you should be able to use the existing cables but you may have to change the lugs.

For a transformer to have an outdoor or an indoor termination termination kit depends on whether you are terminating the cable in a cable box or directly connecting it to outdoor bushings of the transformer. A cable box would need an Indoor termination and incase the transformer has a bushing arrangement, you need an outdoor termination.

Presently you have a 3x50 sqmm outdoor xlpe termination, which can be used with the new transformer if it has a bushing arrangement. In case it has a cable box, the dimensions of the cable box will tell you that whether the outdoor termination can be accomodated in it or else you have to replace it with Indoor, which has a shorter height.

Please maintain proper clearences between the phases at the insulation screen edge of the cable.

In the event going in for a new higher sized cable, Kit selection will depend on voltage,Earthing type, size of conductor etc- & shall be indoor if in a enclosed cable box or outdoor incase of the termination is directly exposed to outdoor conditions.
