Solar Hot Water Pool

04/12/2010 6:47 AM

Swimming pool ,inground.I just put 200 feet of 1 1/2 Pvc pipe on the roof and painted it Flat Black.got a small pump that pumps 320 gal per hour. I have the suction pipe going down about 14 inches and the return about the same. They are about 12 inches apart, and stuck on 2 thermomiters the kind you buy for fish tanks that stick on the side of the glass just to get an idea of the Temp. difference, and it looks like about 2 degrees. When I put my hand in the water to feel the water that is comming from the return I can really feel the difference.Im going to enclose the pipe soon, and I know that will get the water even warmer.Oh the out side air temp was about76 to 80 deg.I hoping with the pipes closed in that their will be about a 10 deg difference. Were in Florida.

hope this will help someone.

John

Nice one, John. Why not register on CR4? All sorts of stuff discussed here.

When you say "I have the suction pipe going down about 14 inches and the return about the same ...", do you mean 14" below the surface of the pool? You may find it more effective to go deeper (inlet and outlet nearer the bottom). It won't make any significant difference to the work the pump has to do, as you'll still have the same head, but it should mix the water better, so you don't have the warmer water layered on the top. It may also be a bit more efficient, as the water from lower down will be a bit cooler.

Nice, there have been a few solar hot water threads.
Try to take the inlet from the coldes possible part of the pool to maximise heat transfer.

Thanks guys, I think that I will lower the inlet to get more of the colder water.

Great Job John,

You say the inlet and return are 12 inches apart, you might try puting the inlet at one end of the pool and the return in the other then. You could then warm the whole pool, and not just one end.

Good Job !!
