Power Cable Comparison

04/14/2010 12:59 PM

I was wondering if anyone out there knew of an indipendent testing or engineering company that specializes in cable construction. I have a customer with a dispute and is looking for a 3rd party to compare 2 manufacturers of the same cable type for differences in ampacity.

The cable in questions is DEL vs DLO, which is a 2kV rated flexible cable. Location is US. The service we are looking for is a comparison in the construction as it relates to the tables posted on the manufacturer's tech sheets. Each manufacturer is using a different table as a basis for current capacity. We would probably like to have the ampacity caclulated for both manufacturers using both of the tables.

I hope this is not confusing. We're looking for a source so we can get a price for this service. Thanks.

I cannot directly help you in the USA, but you should look up your NIST registered laboratories and find the ones that are registered for electrical parameters.

YOU will also need to distinctly specify the tests that are required. From your descriptions above, it would seem most appropriate that you do this in consultation with the lab before giving them samples. This will clarify what it is you are actually asking and what results the answers will mean.

Remember also that some specs will talk DC while others relate AC and yet others related "peak intermittant" and others will talk "ultimate failure". Most will also specify issues relating to duty cycle and also the environment the cable is in and the separation of that cable from any others as potential heat sources.

If you are dealing with reputable cable suppliers, then you will probably find that both conform to the specifications they have quoted and you (or your client) will need to determine suitability of the cables for your specific situation.

There are two agencies in the US that perform this type of service. One is Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and the other one is InterTek testing Services . You can look these up on the internet and get the information you need.
