Telescopic Cylinder (Double Acting)

04/15/2010 3:20 PM

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am trying to figure out how a double acting telescoping cylinder works. Can anyone point me in the right direction where there is a diagram?

Maria.

A double acting telescopic cylinder is capable of powered extension, as well as powered retraction.

A general description of the operation of these can be found at a very popular place, Wikipedia. Here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telescopic_cylinder is a link to the appropriate article.

Have some fun!

Ah, MariaF, I discover you are not really a newby to hydraulics! Please excuse the simplified offering in my #1.

Diagram?

Is this more like what you are after?

I am still trying to figure out if you are a student? Would you clear this up for me?

Hello Doorman, Thank you for the CAD diagram of the telescopic cylinder internal layout. If you notice on the design the ports are located on the smallest stage (ie. rod). The problem that I am having is I cannot put the porting on the smallest stage (rod) but on the barrel of the cylinder (input and output for double acting), which makes it complicated. I have taught of using a double barrel design for the 2nd stage with a passage way for oil to escape, I am in the process of laying it out to see if that would work. Has anyone came across this problem before, it is only a 2 stage telecylinder?

Here is a solution used with success many years ago for the controlled lifting and lowering of a drilling rig.

I made only a principle sketch since I am sure you can complete the details but if you need any information more please do not hesitate.

In fact the original solution was a 3 stages due to the high required ratio between extended and retracted length.

Hi nick name, the design you for the telescopic double action cylinder could the same arrangement be used to create a pump instead for compressing air by hand?

Do you have a drawing of this double acting telescoping cylinder when it is extended showing how the air flow would retract the cylinder and what sequence?

Thank you,

MISTKR
