What has lower O2 gas permeability - Nylon, Copper, Stainless????

04/16/2010 6:17 PM

I have some customers that are needing to test in the sub PPM levels for some elements like H2, N, and O2. They have the instruments, but the incoming gas is becoming contaminated on the way from the .99997% pure gas to the instrument.

What tubing would be best? I have found that some say stainless is more permeable than some nylon formulations, but I have not found any source of information that compares the different materials for flexible tubing that is not extremely expensive.

We have to run some lengths over 100' in some applications, and want to compare permeability with cost.

Thanks for your help, Curtis

The best is copper. But first it needs to be heated up that is discolored. This process tightens the structure

After that, second best is Stainless Steel 316 or 316 L. Nylon comes third.

With copper we reach levels of 100 ppb for 10 meter. Pipe diameter 1/4 O.D. Our laboratory has one of the lowest dew point generator system in the world. We calibrate the top names' cells.

This is PRACTICAL experience laboratory information.
