The raised face helps to ensure that the bolting forces are applied to a defined (and smaller) area of the gasket. Flange serrations increase the friction between the gasket and the flange face, which helps to keeps the gasket from blowing out sideways. Apart from any complicated equations, the concepts are quite straightforward.

This question has been asked and answered many times on this forum. On the right where it says "Search this forum" or "search all of CR4" type in serration or raised face etc and you will read many very good responses.
