Documentation will be your first requirement:

All your material certifications will have to be traceable. For a small company the best way is to make you supplier provide certifications. Then create a lot number by linking the PO number to the date received -for example PO# 2500:

If it was received today 2-11-2007, the lot number would be 2005-021107. All receipts for this PO, will have that Lot number. All certifications received from your supplier and all the receiving packing lists will also be attached to that PO and filed numerically. Attach a lot identifier Tag or mark the raw material with the lot number to establish traceability. Insure the lot number is on your bill of sale and if you ever have a question the lot number will trace back to your PO#2500 where the certifcations will be filed.

I suggest a small company to use ISO 9000 guidelines they are the most basic guidelines and separate the requirements of inventory, purchasing and lot control needed by a small manufacturer as yourself. Keep it simple, make sure your material is tracked, you do not have to be ISO registered to make it work, ISO compliance is a good first step. Last thing you want is to use the wrong grade steel in an important steel application, the customer will track you down no matter where you live!

Good luck

Mark

Sounds like you need to apply some Lean principals. Inventory stacking up is a result of a couple of problems, if it's stacking up waiting to get into the machine, then you have a bottle neck at that operation. If you can, re-route the work to another machine, if you can't then you need to do a set-up reduction on the machine. When you don't have set-up time, you have more production off the machine. One time I was able to eliminate set-up on a CNC milling machine completely. It can be done.

If you have too much finished good inventory, then you have over production problems, this can kill a small business, holding all that inventory is money just sitting on the shelf. To fix this problem, you need a Kan-Ban pull system. Don't produce anything until you need it.

Seems like you have a lot of waist, look for any of several books on LEAN MANUFACTURING. They focus on eliminating waist in your operation.
