one more question on bridge bearing

04/18/2010 8:34 AM

(Bridge bearing is used)To isolate components or parts of a structure or assembly of parts when their relative movements must be independent of each other.

The text in the bracket is added for understanding purpose. And my question is: what does each" other" refer to here? Coz i can not see the reason for using "each other" here. What is your opinion ?

I agree, it is redundant. You could delete either "relative" or, "of each other":

(Bridge bearing is used)To isolate components or parts of a structure or assembly of parts when their movements must be independent of each other.

(Bridge bearing is used)To isolate components or parts of a structure or assembly of parts when their relative movements must be independent.

I believe that:"(Bridge bearing is used)To isolate components or parts of a structure or assembly of parts when their relative movements must be independent." is correct.

I believe that "relative" is more descriptive/important than, "of each other" in this case.

I think what it means is the bridge part must be able to move independently from the fixed part ie the pillars or the ends of the bridge connected to the land, so the bit in the middle the span can expand and contract in the heat / cold and slide over the bearings as the span effectively gets longer in heat and shorter in cold.

The OP is a translator. Here's the first part.

One Question on FLUOROGOLD® Slide Bearings

We're talking seismic isolation of bridges.

2.To provide release or sliding surfaces at bearing ends of structural members, thereby accommodating shrinkage or thermal motion of members.

which is what i said

and as the bearing is a sliding bearing with just the weight of the bridge keeping it there if the ground was to fall away as in a seismic event then the bridge would not be dragged with the ground.

in the UK rail bridges just sit on bearings and if hit hard enough by over height lorries trying to get under them the bridge part is sometimes moved

The bearings are there for any task that needs them, mainly expansion. We usually put guides on bridge bearings etc. to make sure that the movement is limited to the correct direction.
