Tank Design

04/19/2010 6:04 AM

Hello,

We have to design a tank to store De-mineralized water at a required temperature.

Material to be used = SS 304

Volume of De-min water storage = 700 gallons

Temperature required = 70 to 80 degrees C

This De-min water when reaches the required temperature mark (The tank will have submersible heaters installed) will be pumped to the individual gas turbines water wash tanks. The gas turbine's compressor requires De-min water temperature of 75 degrees C for best results.

What I need is the appropriate Structure of the tank (Should it be cylinderical or Rectangular?), sheet thickness and if possible dimensions of the tank.

Thank you

Given the level of your knowledge, I think you would be better off buying one.

You might get a hint by looking at these:

It would be too complex to explain you how to design the tank but I can give you some hints what to ask you supplier for:

the tank design should be optimal from the total ownership cost.

The costs related to the tank design are basically 3:

- material cost including the steel plates/sheets and the thermal insulation

- cost of welding

- cost of lost heat from hot water to ambiance

The 3 parameters do not lead to same geometry but the geometry depends on the cost of the different "components" and of the cost of thermal energy.

From the form the tank cane be either prismatic or cylinder what counts is at the end how much you invest and how much you have to further pay for the heating.

Let your supplier provide those calculations it is quite interesting how the form parameters influence the total cost. the ratios of the specific costs will define the optimal tank. In general the heat losses are determinant but since I do not know where you are and which are the specific costs it may be different.

the most common used type is a cylindrical one with cone roof top. IS 803 can be used for the design. how ever IS 804 can also be used but only if the tank is rectangular one.
