More Than Two Monitors?

04/20/2010 9:24 AM

Hi All,

I have a Dell Precision M4400 lap top here at work and an external monitor. I have set it up as extended desktop so I'm always flopping between the two screens.

After working like this for the past two years, I can't imagine anyone working with only one monitor at a time.

My question is, how do I set up my computer to use more then 2? We have lots of monitors around and I'd like to hook up another if I could figure out how to configure the software.

Thanks in advance

Laby

It's more of a hardware configuration issue than software. In general you can only have two monitors per video card. So, you'll need to add a video card, if the video card has only one output.

In a desktop, you'd add another video card inside the computer.

With a laptop, you'll have to purchase a product such as this one. It's basically another video card, but through USB. You won't get very good video performance like quick refresh rates, etc. But for the office work like you mentioned, it should be fine.

Some more external video cards:

Hey there Laby. For laptops, the answer is a little more expensive. If you search VGA splitter in google you'll find standard a cable that hooks up to your laptops VGA out and split it 2 ways...that's cheap and you may already be using this. However, that will only hook up 2 external screens. We want 2+. In google "shopping" filter price high to low. This will pull up the various other vga splitters that work with anywhere from 2-8 VGA monitors from a single computer. I was able to find the "cables to go" brand 4 port extender for 50 bucks, while the 8 port extender was closer to 100.

Let me know if you need any further help.

P.S. Your pup looks like mine.

Hi Labyguy,

The products that yamdankee mentioned are more of what you are looking for. They allow independent configuration of each connected monitor, allowing you to expand your desktop across the connected screens. In contrast, the splitter option will only clone the signal currently running on the feed cable across the multiple screens (exactly the same picture on each monitor).

I believe Matrox have a product take takes a VGA output and can split it across 3 screens. (Note this is very different to a VGA distribution amp which feeds the same screen to multiple monitors.) The Matrox product requires you to configure the display as a very wide screen (3 x normal width) and then splits this into 3 sections onto each monitor.

Coupled with the internal display of a laptop, this could give you a total of 4 screens. I can't remember the name of the product, but I am sure you can use Google as well as I can...

There are a number of companies that sell usb-vga (dvi) adapters - my oersonal favourite is the evga ones - your local Frys will have them. For about $50 this will turn any usb port into a video output and is how I run my Sony Vaio currently. I'm not sure what the limit to how many of these you could use but I've used the ext vga on my laptop llong with the evga adapter and an iogear one (had it lying around) to run 3 external monitors + integral screen at once
