Is there a formula that one can use to calculate the size of a cable if one knows the circumference of the cable? The formula for area of a circle does not seem to work, I've tried it on number of cable(mostly single cores).
If you are calculating in terms of mm2 or circular mils, the formula works, assuming you using correct simple geometry (and accounting for wire stranding). If you are trying to calculate AWG (American Wire Gauge), I doubt that anything works.

You can get the circumference of a cable by using a string; wrap it around the cable and then measure the length of you string. You can also get the diameter/radius by making a circle out of your string and measure your diameter; from there you can get your radius.
I hear that you also have to consider whether you cable is a solid (one single strand) or stranded (made up of number of strands) cable.
