Wire Rope Lifting Capacity

04/23/2010 7:50 AM

Hey ppl,

Hope life is good. I need some means of estimating the lifting capacity of a wire rope, a 20 mm 6x37 designation steel wire rope with a hemp core. Could anyone shed some light?

The easiest way is to get it inspected by the engineer/surveyor from the insurance company for the purposes of including it on the organisation's general register under the all-risks indemnity insurance policy, and get that individual to carry out the assessment and testing on it.

Lend it to me. I've got some tree stumps to pull out. I'll tell you how strong it is when I give it back. <Wheeze, splutter>

Here is some good foundational material. not sure if this cover hemp core, but good info anyhow.

See IS standards for steel wire ropes.

Shouldn't it be like this?

(tensile strength of material x number of strands x area of each strands)/ factor of safety

Yes. The factor of safety varies with the condition of the cable, which is a function of age and maintenance history, hence the test-and-inspect requirement for certified lifting equipment.

The overall strength of a rope depends also on how it is manufactured, so one can only take theory so far before a test is required.

Hi Rediah,

There so many factors involved in arriving at SWL (Safe Working Load) of the wire ropes such as tensile strength of steel, Standards applicable, if used in single fall of two falls (through single pulley).I am giving below the link for more information:-
