Thrust Bearing Clearance

04/26/2010 1:21 PM

The thrust bearing clearance specifications on our gas turbine is between 0.010" to 0.014". Now what happens is that they increased the thrust bearing clearance to 0.017". What will be the effect to the machine in general.

Dear Friends,

The specifications of the parts of an equipment provided by the manufacturer are, usually, of the parts found best during test runs in ideal conditions. Sometime we need to reassess the conditions, such as total running hours, ambient temperature, cooling water temperature etc.

The main reason for replacement with a bearing of higher clearance is rise in temperature of a bearing with lesser clearance. If the systm functions smoothly after the deviation from given specification, the adopted modification should be accepted.

Regards.

my dear

If you are talking about segment thrust bearing or antifriction thrust ball bearing.

If thrust bearing clearance increased more than allowable thin you will result as follow:

1-high vibration in the machine.

2-High rotor movement lead to defect machine parts.

3-High displacement reading.

if your machine has voting system thin it will shutdown immediately.

All the best
