Have you tried cleaning and lubricating it?

If the capacitor is disconnected 1 ph indn. motor dont even start rotating.i m sure if the fan is mechanicaly good it is due to inefficiency of capacitor. If u dont have an idea about connections get a new capacitor of same rating and connect it as previous one.pis reply if it works.

Get yourself a speed control for ceiling fan they also exist as module that fits into your switch box. Lowes or Home depot sells these. It has at least one capacitor per speed choice. Shorten or take out the existing one and your fan will run like new. Hurry, it is getting hot in here.

Does your fan have a capacitor? I have 3 ceiling fans and they are all shaded pole motors which don't use capacitors. Cleaning out dust and lubricating the bearing might fix the problem.

Most have 2 or 3. Mine are all ok, but my ceilings are too high - I have put the fans on highest speed and have these controllers do the RPM'ing. All 28. The shaded pole array is to get your basic work speed down without using a gear box. (multi poles) the rest is CAP/ CAP - check the hollow spaces.

Correct. Multi-segment film cap is well hidden inside my larger fan. Have seen old paper/oil motor caps fail, but have never seen a film cap fail under normal operating conditions. Still think OP fans may just need cleaning & lube.
