You can add as much information as you like to a barcode, the information could be in the code itself or held in a database.
Doing it in 3d where the scanner wand or other reading device moves the scan line up & down as well as scanning in a linear direction obviously saves on space.

They do software that runs under the .Net framework with code available for Visual Studio. The code is in C# or C++ i think. You may be able to use the FREE Bisual Express edition for the software.
