Methane hydrate is releasing methane all over the world. Methane is a natural gas used in power plants to make electricity. It is also a greenhouse pollutant gas. I have not heard of anyone capturing this free fuel. The engineering can not be that difficult to capture and transport it to a user. Maybe it will take engineers not influenced by coal or oil interests.

Is there anyone who suggested you do mechanical engineering? That is the person whom you should ask this question. and if you were the decider in that case you should regret on your decision.

What project you should do depends on many aspects including your geographical location, surrounding society and your college. For example, if you hail from an area that has some crisis, like water or pure air, may be you should consider working on it. Nevertheless, mechanical engineering offers as immense opportunities as any other field. You only need to know what your passion is.
