My International Industrial Engineer Bachelor's Degree

05/03/2010 12:26 PM

I need advise on how to validate my Industrial Engineer career here in US.

I came to this country 4 1/2 years ago from Dominican Republic. Due to the circumstances and poor advice I started working in banks till now. I've been very successful in it but now I wanted to go back with my career which is what I really love. I am currently located in Clifton NJ and I do not know how and where to start...I completed the degree with 3.74 GPA. I have called some colleges in Newark but they seems not to give me the right answers. If someone can help me on this I would really appreciated.

Thanks

If you are still working in the banking industry, then try putting some of your industrial engineering skills to work at your current place of employment. I am sure that there are many opportunities for implementing office lean principles there. Also work on obtaining certifications such as: six sigma black belt, lean k, PE. This will help you get a leg up on your competition when applying to jobs. It will also show the perspective employer that you are serious about your chosen occupation. Also make sure that you note all of these accomplishments on your resume. Especially any big money saving ideas that you thought of that have been implemented.

A PE is a State License, and much more involved then those other certifications. To receive a PE license, a IE from the Dominican Republic is unlikely to get credit for education, and thus would require at least 6 years working experience with an EIT (more like 16 without) as a professional engineer in training under a licensed engineer, and probably 3 or 4 licensed references. However, most states do not require a license for a IE to practice, just possibly for them to use the title of industrial engineer, professional engineer or consulting engineer. so get a job in house somewhere that they are hiring and industrial engineer and be prepared to take a big pay decrease.

Not sure how secure this site is, so I do not want to send potentially private info...However, as my name states, rurudr, dr is for Rep. Dom. I have several colleagues from the DR now working in the US. Most of them with Ind. Eng. education, and a few CPA's...so maybe they can lend some insight. Most were field engineers of mine at one point or another in their carreers working on projects at CND - ITABO - AES - etc. Send me a private e-mail and I will send you contact info...and you can drop my name. Good Luck

Why not try a simple approach, if you see a job opening for an indusrial engineer that you like; apply for it. If any validation is required the employer may know how to get it.

All 50 states have their own requirements for a P.E. Once it is recorded in one state, most states have a reciprocity agreement with other states, so you can get a PE license in whatever state you need, with a few exceptions.

Now, the bad news, eveery state charges an annual fee to maintian your P E license. In PA, it is $50.00 every 2 years. I am pretty certain PA and NJ have a reciprocity agreement. NY does not have reciprocity agreement with any other state. You would have to take your P E exam again in N Y. I think 45 states have a reciprocity agreement. To mauintain a license in every state gets somewhat expensive. You probably need to pick and choose what state(s) makes sense for you.

You can Google professional engineer license for different states and find out if they have reciprocity and how much is the annual fee. Good Luck
