The regulation of an alternator is an important parameter and its approximate value must be known in connection with its protection, voltage control and parallel running. Regulation depends on the resistance, leakage reactance and on the armature reaction. For salient pole alternators, its value is approximately 10 to 15 percent for unity power factor and 20 to 25 percent with 0.8 power factor lagging. The value of regulation is larger for turbo-alternators. The cost of the alternator increases with smaller value of regulation, because a small value involves a long air gap and more field copper. A larger value of regulation means considerable percentage reactance; wich limits the shor-circuit current of the alternator.
