Recording 1.3 GB ISO Download

05/08/2010 6:27 PM

I recently purchased a download as an ISO that came as 1 CD and 1.3 GB.

I now wonder how I can burn it to a disc.

CD-R or CD-RW is too small.

What do I do now, since I cannot break it down into 2 CDS?

Actually the whole set will be 4 CDS and I do not want to purchase anymore if I can't burn it.

Is there a DVD that will work?

Sometimes I know enough to be dangerous and I promise to try to stop.

Help!!

There is freeware around which will spread an iso image over several CDs - other stuff which will do it on a DVD (assuming you have a burner!).

BTW - is it data, music or what?

Sorry - bin a long hard day.

I've (for the last few days) been trying to burn a Kaspersky rescue disk which will actually do what it's supposed to (my desktop m/c has a rootkit trojan). I've been through about 6 or 7 CD-Rs, using 3 or 4 assorted burning programs - all without making a disk which will boot on either my desktop or laptop machine. This is by-the-bye; the point is I've checked out several bits of software, and while I can't remember which did what, I'm certain I stumbled over something to do your job.

Too late tonight. If no-ones come up with anything by the time I surface tomorrow - I'll check back over my history & see if I can find something.

John

Think apaul is right here[1]. According to the blurb from NTFS, Active@ Iso Burner should have no trouble burning it to a DVD. It may also be able to do multiple CD's, but it would be less mucking about to use a single DVD.

Thank you very much.

I did a quick peek at Staples website, but didn't see them listed.

Thinking maybe these were not manufactured anymore.

Thanks again.

Sorry - didn't spot the RW. DVD-R will be fine. In Tesco's the other day, they had shelves full of DVD-R's, and hardly a CD-R (also no CD-RW's) to be found. Similar scenario in PC World. Haven't been to Staples for a while.

I've never had a problem burning data DVD's (mostly for backing up photos), but I've never tried an iso image to DVD. Can't see why there should be any problem.

A bit more information would be helpful. Do you have the hardware capability to burn a DVD? If so, that's what you need to do. Most any of the burner packages I have looked for will recognize the medium in the drive, and set you up for the appropriate burning operation. Secondly, has the vendor of the software offered any instructions on their web site? Usually they will offer different options for different situations. There are most likely help forums on the vendor's web site as well, unless you have purchased from an alternative source.

I am not sure what you mean by "1 CD and 1.3 GB. Is the 1.3 GB also an *.iso file, or is this some other format that can be read by the program after the software is installed? (I am thinking maybe you are looking at some sort of graphics package that might have the basic program on CD, then supplemental elements, like parts libraries, in a different format).

Remember, if all else fails, read the instructions (unless, of course, you are trying to cap a blowout in the Gulf of Mexico, for which it is pretty obvious there is no instruction manual)...

Your 1.3 GB ISO file was never meant to be put on a CD.

Just put a blank DVD in your drive, open the ISO file with your burning software and burn to the disk.

You should have no trouble unless you are using ancient software or you do not have a DVD RW drive.

Any modern burning software will read an ISO file.

Put it on a DVD and burn it as a data DVD. Most burning software will burn it to a DVD.

Why?

OP (and thread title) states "1.3 GB".

Would whoever marked my post (above) off-topic be kind enough to let me know why?

A pm or an anonymous post would be fine.

A CD will hold up to 700 MB.

A DVD will hold up to 4.7 GB or almost 7 times more data.

USB sticks come in various sizes up to 64 GB.

A 2GB stick would work but you have to extract the files using an ISO program before you copy them to the stick.

Not sure this will help in your case, but I use Virtual Clone to do most my large ISO installs. I also use it to split up ISOs that are too large for a DVD for storage and backup. You can download it from download.com.

IF THIS IS AN ISO IMAGE, WHY CAN'T YOU BURN IT INTO A DVD?

NERO SHOULD DO THIS WITHOUT A PROBLEM? OR FI YOU HAVE A DVD BURNING PROGRAM?

Well, I screwed up.

1) I should have said ISO Image, instead of CD.

2) Can you believe it that this new laptop can read CDS & DVDS, Burn CDS, but doesn't have a DVD Burner. It has been a lot of years since I had a machine that could not burn DVDS.

3) Took my 10 year old grandson to find out that little tidbit.

So, thanks to all, I will do it on another machine and let you know how it worked.

Sorry for wasting the space and time here, my peers.

If you don't require the contents on a physical DVD then you can either extract the files with a tool such as WinRAR www.win-rar.com or use a virtual DVD program like Daemon Tools. Both these methods are quicker and easier than a real DVD.

Re: Recording 1.3 GB ISO Download

Very true but as (if I understood correctly) its "bought" software, then I am sure that after giving out the money the owner will want a "hard copy" just in case his PC hard disk wrecks.

He won't want to buy another copy just because he lost the first one through an accident......

So making a proper DVD and using it (this checks that everything is OK) is the sensible way to go I feel.....

Note.

Remember also that all CDs and DVDs should be kept in a proper box in total darkness when not in (use) or in the player/burner. Sunlight can destroy a disk in a few hours. Passwords should be written with indelible pens on the inside of the box lid or on a sticky label attached to the box lid - again, inside!

Some indelible pens damage the top coating of the disk over time, so here is not recommended...labels on a disk can upset the balance of same, also they sometimes get loose and wreck the player/burner....

Never place any CD/DVD down on ANY surface except in the box or the player ever.

Never touch the top or bottom surface, only at the edges and the hole, use both hands when handing over to someone a CD out of its box for safety. Make sure that they know how to hold them properly.

Never lend CDs/DVDs out......or show them that they are unscratched top and bottom BEFORE lending, demand a new one if they come back scratched.....tell them so up front before they borrow it!!

Re: Recording 1.3 GB ISO Download

I do not understand what you are on about with regard to a 1.3GB DVD ISO image AND a CD, makes no sense at all.

If you downloaded an .ISO file (assume as its more than 700MB that its for a DVD and not a CD), AND you have correctly installed burning software on your PC (most packages will burn .ISO images and make an original disk), all you need to do is double click on the ISO image on your hard disk, this should open up the burning software automatically as well and then it will ask for a blank DVD to be inserted in your DVD Burner (you do have one I assume!!!).

After inserting a fresh DVD just follow instructions (it may take half a minute or so to recognise the fresh disk!!) and any burning software worth its salt will give you an original DVD which (assuming its a software package) will allow you to install the software you bought!!!

Any questions?

By the way, an ISO image is just a way of sending the complete contents of a whole CD or DVD as one file only.....with checksums and the like to make sure its not damaged in any way, shape or form......dozens or even hundreds of individual files could mean that some might get damaged in the transfer.....and get resent and resent etc etc....
