With balanced trim the process pressure applies balanced forces on the plug that counteract so the resulting force is null. With unbalanced trim an increase in process pressure can cause the valve to open (or close depending on design).
A balanced "globe valve" is when the plug has holes on the top of it and uses a split ring like a piston in a car's engine, the holes allow process pressure to equalize on both sides of the plug making it easier for the plug to travel.
An unbalanced plug the process pressure is on only the end of the plug requiring more power to hold the plug in place or to move it towards the process pressure.
