Portable Generator Question

05/10/2010 9:36 AM

I am installing a temporary 2000kw portable generator and noticed on the back it said it was rated for 480vac 3p and 240vac single phase. The building it is feeding is a 480y277v connected. This portable generator will be feeding chillers and a handful of single phase loads.

I am having trouble comprehending how this generator is connected. no diagrams could be located. The main bonding jumper has been disconnected as well.

GET HELP. My friend who is a competent journeyman-lineman blew up a $500.00USD circuit board on a three phase oven because he wasn't familiar with the genset and hooked it up wrong.

Maybe the curmudgeon is boiling up in me, but why should this guest respect the idea that they need qualified, authorized help on site. I'm beginning to feel that they need to fumble around looking stupid and even blowing expensive things up before they will respect the value of a qualified individual on site. Maybe this guest's thread is a bad choice for this rant because he/she did recognize a problem before things went boom.

I wonder is there a surgery blog that I can sign in as a guest to find out how to remove an appendix? My tummy hurts.

Hello, redfred. Sorry to hear that your tummy hurts.

While unaware of a blog regarding a DIY appendectomy, I have seen Open-Heart Surgery for Dummies, from the popular series of books.

Strange, though... There is no "Electricity for Dummies"! Perhaps the authors of the series believe high voltage power is better left to those well versed in the EverReady force.

Now, now, You're just going through a phase. It happens to a lot of people somewhere around 1500-1700 posts. Eventually it will subside and you will learn to ignore the incompetent questions.

Hopefully, devoid of any knowledge gained here, they will go away without enough information to do bodily harm to anyone and maybe hire a competent helper instead.

Cheers

If you can't find the information to do this yourself, at least supply all of the pertinant info you have so one of us can try to point you in the right direction.

You're mixing units. 2000kw/(480V*√3)≈2.4kA

Re: Portable Generator Question

use a voltmeter,

if the generator phase to phase voltage is 480vac, phase to neutral 277 vac, go for it, as simple as that,

if not, rent another generator

competant people loose sometimes innovation sense

to other posters:

if there is a qualified, competent, talented, skilled, experienced, authorized technician around, i am sure our guest was not messing with this generator, so please let's help in the way we can,

i think the forum administration should apply some filtering on the questions to avoid time wasting long discussions
