You start a UPS by plugging it into the electrical receptacle. No mouse required.

There's more to it than that, but you didn't ask.

you have to buy the software from the same UPS manufacturer, if you have a UPS. But purpose of UPS is not that to switching manually...it is meant for uninterrupted power supply, which is already on and ready to load upon failure of normal supply when it is required in a system automatically.

What if there's no computer plugged in to the UPS?

What if the computer is connected to the same UPS?

Who should start first?

The UPS to supply the computer to click the mouse to run the UPS? or the computer to click the mouse to start the UPS to supply the computer??

Big Dilema!!!!

For the serious answer:

Yes it could be, but your computer should be supplied from another source, and you should have the genuine manufacturer software

If your UPS does not come with a monitoring -control software, you can still start it by a mouse click by adding an I/O board, and with some VB small program you can make a relay to energize with this famous mouse click and this relay make your UPS to start....

Again, your computer should not be supplied from the same UPS

Every UPS that I've seen that has a communications port, be it serial or Ethernet had one way communications to signal a power failure. I suppose you could approach a UPS manufacturer to write some code for you or find a clever programmer to do it for you. Good luck

APC ups systems have software that you can talk to the ups with. I have a 700 watt ups nad I can decide how long I want it to run after an outtage. Which outlets to shutdown first and a few other things.

I don't recommend changing much in them though as they are optimized for the best use. The actual switching is done automatically and I don't think or remember that you can do anything about it. I imagine it is because everything that I have plugged into it is insured for the full replacement value by APC.
