Why?

Unless somebody goofed in the original specs, changing the CT ratio will make the meter read incorrectly.

Of course, if I could sneak in some CTs of double the ratio, I could cut my electrical bill in half...until I got caught.

You have to make sure of the CT ratio installed on site, before changing it on the meter via the software you are using.

If the connection should have a ct ratio of 50/5 and it is programmed 100/5, it means your electricity bill will be doubled and vice versa.

Your factor of 2 is correct, but it is applied in the wrong direction.

Wrong direction how? With 100/5 my factor would be 20 and with 50/5 my factor would be 10. The CT that I am using always step down the current to 5A.
