welding on Nitriding (material SAE J2340 420 XF )

05/14/2010 3:00 AM

material SAE J2340 420 XF with gas Nitriding Surface Hardness Hv (0.1)350 MIN,

Surface Layer 10 um min

we r facing problem with this part in mig welding we use Flux Core wire grade FC-71-T-1 dia 1.2 and also Mig wire CO2 with gas (co2+amonia)

bt not sucessed.we already doing mig weld in various mat. like SAE J2340 550 XF bt not facing any prob.

In this we facing penetration prob. we play much with parameters on high parameter metal melt n in low penetration not coming

pls give any better solution with detail

Please write clearly. Do not text. We/Atleast I am unable to understand.

The Nitrided steels (ie if already Nitrided) are quite difficult to weld. The escaping nitrogen is likely to create a lot of defects, especially in the root, where it is likely to get trapped. This will be more pronounced in high heat, medium to rapid cooling welds where the solidified top layer will prevent the escape.

It may be better to remove the layer from the HAZ before you start the welding.

If you are going to weld, the nitrided protion is anyway going to lose all its properties. Then why not just grind the layer off?

For further you must wait for Milo

we can remove layer at this time because now we r in proto phase bt in production this is impossible due to heavy production and this is a round parts dia 260mm having 12 weld equal space. so this is not possible to remove the layor.

Give any other solution

Mask the area to be welded before nitriding.
