House Comfort and Warm Air Circulation

02/15/2007 1:40 PM

Background: I have a 1.5 story house, 2000sf first floor, 900 up, and will finish about 1/2 of the basement (1000sf). I am planning to add ductwork off plenum to supply finished basement area. Current system with dampers is adequate to handle the air distro. I do not have variable speed motor on the air handler and do not want to run my fan motor continuously for comfort if I can help it due to cost, but would like to avoid the basement getting cold much quicker than the main level. Also - running the fan continuous seems to eventually blow air that is too cold and creates a draft.

Thus the project...

I am considering running an new "return air" duct from the highest point in the house where hot air is trapped and no returns exist (they are all in bedrooms on the floor/wall) - all the way to the basement floor. I'd place fan on the basement side to pull hot air from the upstairs to the basement. I would consider running this only when the HVAC air handler is not running. Not sure if I would run this same setup in summer.

Is this a viable alternative to the "always on" blower on the air handler?

We don't have basements down here in Texas, but isn't a basement a fairly well insulated space? Mightn't a small space heater keep your basement warm enough, if you close the ducts? Or radiant flooring? (something else we don't have down here.)

I have thought about this same scheme for cooling my upstairs in the summer. In lieu of a special duct, I use a turbo fan to circulate air in the stair case.

Ducting hot air from the attic to warm a much cooler basement is feasible. Moving about 800cfm should do the job depending on curves and bends needed to install the duct. May I suggest a reversible duct fan that would permit a summer/winter function and controlling the fan motor with a simple heat/cool cycle thermostat. Hope I've helped.

Keep in mind the distance and placement of the duct may cool more than you expect before it gets in the basement...

If I am understanding your proposal correctly, bringing unconditioned air (return air) from upstairs and dumping it into the basement (where you would need the conditioned air to be) will not help your situation. You will need a "supply air" and a "return air" originating from your current HVAC system in order to effectively heat/cool the basement.

It appears that you will be heating/cooling a total of 3900 sq. ft., which tells me that you will require a 5.5 ton system. If the current system is not 5.5 tons, then you will not be efficient in heating/cooling anywhere in the house.

I would recommend installing a separate unit, 1.5 tons for your current basement size. Not sure where you live......but most basements tend to be more humid than other parts of the house, tend to be warmer or cooler than other parts of the house, so a heat pump should suffice for this area. Purchase a unit that boasts the highest SEER rating for optimum efficiency. Both York and Trane are outstanding units.

Good luck with this project!
