Prolonged use PET bottles.

05/16/2010 2:59 AM

It is seen that packaged drinking water bottles have Resin Identification code as 1. For more on resin identification code see here.

Even though the instruction on the bottles clearly says that it has to be crushed and recycled immediately after use, people are using the bottles for a continued period.

Is there any toxic effects from such prolonged use?

Advance thanks.

Yes! You will die a slow and agonizing death if you don't "recycle immediately after use" any plastic bottle from which you drink.

Advance welcome.

I've been using PET bottles for homebrewed beer for quite a while now. I use the dark tinted bottles that once held ginger beer or cider.

When I first started using these bottles, I spent a while googling to see if it was safe, and it appears that opinions on this fall into two camps :

1) No harm likely, nothing harmful in PET to leach out, no proven hazards. This seem to be the approach taken by, among others, the US FDA.

2) The "best be careful there are lots of potential hazards" camp who would advise against the reuse of PETs. Interestingly enough, one of the chemicals that is warned about, DEHA, is not present in PET.

I am inclined to go with the first camp, there seems to be more science there.
