Requirements for Motor Point of Origin

02/15/2007 5:08 PM

Does anybody know if NEMA Standards require a motor's nameplate to include the country point of orgin? For example, If you export a product with an electric motor, does the motor nameplate require to state where (country) was manufactured. Ie: made in USA, made in China, made in Brazil.

Thanks for your comments.

Not sure about NEMA Standards, but increasingly the "Made in ____ ", just means the country of final assembly.

I would look into the regulations of the Departments of Commerce of the manufacturer's and customer's countries and what both Customs agencies require. Usually, these government agencies and also the trade agreements between countries have requirements as to the identification of the goods exported and imported and certainly, the country of manufacturing is important to establish duties, permits, etc. (on the actual goods and not only in the paperwork)

I believe the requirement for statement of origion is a commercial, not a NEMA requirement.

I never did find any field of a NEMA motor's nameplate for the state of origin. My opinion is that it would be irrevelant anyway.

I like the quote on your post! NEMA standards include putting the manufacturer's name and plant location on the nameplate. See MG1-10.39.6. I don't have a copy of this to verify. The National Electrical Code does not require this, because it is concerned with fire and personnel safety.
