FTL Communication

05/17/2010 8:56 PM

Scientists in Geneva sent 2 entangled photons down fiber optic cables to 2 different villages, 11 miles apart. When one photon was measured, the other one changed state instantly, much faster than C.

Since no information was sent, Einstein can rest peacfully.

Or can he.

They actually sent 1 bit of information. With many entangled photons sent in parallel, a larger amount of information could be sent, FTL.

Does this not violate the speed of C?

Do you have a link to an article or a scholarly paper on this?

This is a fascinating frontier, but it would be nice to get more information on the specific experiment.

Information is not stuff. It has no mass, weight, or other measurable quantities.

In thisa case it has no value, either.

Discover monthly magazine was launched in October 1980 by Time Inc. It was sold to Family Media, the owners of Health, in 1987. Walt Disney Company bought the magazine when Family Media went out of business in 1991. In October 2005 Discover was sold to two media investment companies. Bob Guccione, Jr., the eldest son of Penthouse founder Bob Guccione, and founder of Spin and Gear magazines, served as CEO for the first two years.

Time. Walt Disney. Bob Guccione. Not real credentials for a science magazine, are they.

fyi... the owners just collect the money.

if science publishing with advertising makes money, then it can support itself,
otherwise the organization has to spend tax dollars, et al, to survive.

so are you really objecting to free enterprise with regards to science publishing?

I trust it just as much as all the social/political jostling at the public/institutional trough.

science is supposed to be science... which primarily means 'reproducible experiments' to me, and therefore binary; true or not true.

Also, in your case, your information has no mass, weight, or other measurable quantities, including intelligence, enlightenment, or logic.

Be careful to whom you give a rope, they may hang you with it.
