NDT for SS pipes

05/20/2010 12:34 AM

hi.. my first silly question is -" do we do any NDT on fillet joint?" If yes, then please suggest some simple ones that can be done at site or factory floor. Secondly, can we do any NDT test on fillet joints of Stainless Steel pipes? my consultant is asking for tests in Stainless steel where i have welded flange and pipe and anchoring flange? Please suggest .... thanks

WE GENERALLY DO DYE PENETRATION AND MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING ON FILLET JOINTS IF THE MATERIAL TO BE JOINED IS OF MILD STEEL .BUT FOR STAINLESS STEEL MATERIAL ON FILLET WELDS YOU CAN DO NDT BY DYE PENETRATION TEST AS STAINLESS STEEL CANNOT BE MAGNETISED.

Hydro test/ Pneumatic with soap bubble are the additionals.

MPI can also be replaced by Eddy Current testing (In case the SS is non magnetic)

What is the pipe line carrying ? temperature? Pressure?

You may always take guidance from ASME or API, there are details about the pipeline NDT requirements.

If it is a code line, it is mandatory, else the guidelines are always useful.

"NDT" (Non-Destructive Testing) as you have written is NOT the proper terminology.

The proper terminology is "NDE" (Non Destructive Examination).

Please go to this web site and read all about it:
