Southeast Asia Water Table Question

05/20/2010 11:58 PM

An associate is going overseas with a charity to look into failed water systems in SE Asia.

What history can be gotten regarding the water table in the jungle areas from the tunnels used by the VC during the Viet Nam war? How did the VC deal with ground water? where might records of this special nature be found?

Hi Bill,

The biggest problem in SE Asia is that most of the impoverished people live near rivers and have no proper sanitation, so they simply use the same river they draw their water supply from as a toilet. Furthermore, even in the cities, the sewerage systems in many of these countries tend to use the septic tank system. As water tables in SE Asia tend to be very high, this often results in contaminated groundwater. And of course, the biggest problem in this part of the world is the rampant corruption in most of the countries there.

Hope you find this useful.

Hey Vader !! long time, my friend!

Yes, I agree, I spent last year evaluating or designing systems to correct the WW and W supplies in Iraq if you remember... I have also been to other third world countries from rural Korea down to SE Asia and am quite aware.

The deep wells in cambodia seem to have burned out from over use, the surface water is seasonal and as you say contaminated, we are concerned about heavy metal contamination in the shallow water table.

we wondered about what the VC dealt with because we remembered the tunnels often went deeper than 10 meters.

DO you still have my private email address?

Hi Bill my friend,

Aside from sewage and garbage contamination, the next biggest problem here in Cambodia where I'm currently working on a water treatment plant project is arsenic contamination. It's okay here in Phnom Penh since they draw their water from the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, but it's a very serious problem in Kompong Spieu. I actually wanted to construct a wetland there to use phytoremediation to remove the arsenic at minimal cost for the locals; unfortunately, I was unable to raise the funds to carry out the project.

I'll try to get in touch with my friend Dale Edmonds. She's the head of Riverkids, a Singapore-based NGO that protects Cambodian orphans from pedophiles. This might not be quite up her alley, but I'm sure she must know some big shots here to assist you if you're interested. And yes, I still have your personal email address.

All the best my friend.

if you tunnel below the water table, water enters the tunnel from the soil and you must pump it out. In rock, there is less water. I alluvial gravel = a flood you can never pump out.

In a clay soil you can use wells to pump out the water table and irrigate, some water then runs to the seal and some evaporates, so there is a steady draw down of the aquifer. At some point the pump energy to irrigate gets excessive. Some wells are down 1000 feet in various areas.

I suspect that there was excessive use of water by small electric pumps and hole drills that have proliferated over asia over the last 20 years.

There is no solution. You must draw less water and let the aquifer recharge. Sadly, this is the tragedy of the commons writ large, and huge problems are coming. They need to go to drip irrigation where you run a small tube to the roots of each plant and give it what it needs, You can also fertilize in that water. You can also cover the rest of the ground with black fil to stop weeds and water loss by evaporation.

Google is your friend...
