05/23/2010 2:16 AM

Hi cr4 engineers. My friend ask about the difference in job description of a Quality Control and Quality Assurance. Any technical idea to impart is highly appreciated.

The only "technical difference" between QC and QA is the second letter (or the word it stands for). Whatever one calls it, the suitable methods for achieving it will be essentially the same.

Tomayto, tomahto; potayto, potahto; let's call the whole thing off.

I would say QC is a subset of QA.
e.g A QA guy could design the system, test method etc. The CC guy would be the guy doing the sampling recoding etc.

My take:

Quality Assurance procedures are intended to assure that the design and production methods produce a quality object.

Quality Control procedures check material and processes to see if the quality assurance procedures are followed.

Quality Assurance is a Consultant and Quality Control is the Contractor, both of the Owner.

Quality Control records and maintain list of work that does not comply with the contract; has the full authority to direct the removal and replacement of non-conforming material, equipment or workmanship.

Quality Assurance perform on-site technical surveillance, supervision, oversight, and assessment of project.

Quality Assurance ensure that the contractor's system of Quality Control is working effectively.
