Aluminum Shapes

05/24/2010 11:30 AM

Dear All:

I am working in a project to fabricate structural & platform in 6061 T6 Aluminum for a Mexican steelmill but I need to buy those profiles for example CHANNEL 8. "I" beams etc.

Any kind of help would be appreciated.

There are many stockist of aluminum extruded profiles world wide. It is very likely that exact or near equivalent 6061 T6 profiles available ready stock.[p/]

In the unlikely event of no availability you may be forced to go in for custom extrusion. Custom extrusions however, you will pay for tooling, it will take anywhere from one week (which is very fast) to a month (average) for an extruder to run your parts, and you will be stuck with a minimum production run of one billet (several hundred to a thousand pounds of aluminum).

Google "aluminum extruded profile" is awash with relevant information

Something don't sound right about aluminum platform in a steel mill. what size aluminum I beam and channels do you need? stuff like 2,3,4,6 and 8 inch C-channel, angle, heavy, tread plate and sheet I and H beams, square and round tubing solid bar stock and piping should be readily available but it will be very expensive. I find when dealing with aluminum section sand shapes that the usual thickness is about twice that of the same size in steel material. If it was me and I was set on making it work with aluminum I would frame it issuing steel and attach 5/16 " thick tread plate to it along with aluminum or painted steel hand rails. No one would know it had a steel frame underneath the platform although a steel frame will make the structure very strong and ridgid.
