Garage Door Rollers

05/24/2010 6:28 PM

Does anyone know where I can get 2 inch rollers with standard 7/16 bore, but without the shaft for garage doors. Everywhere I look they come with a shaft. My doors are old (antique) and the rollers are able to slide on the shaft rather than the shaft sliding in the hinge. I'm too cheap to buy new doors when everything else is in good shape but the rollers. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. I considered changing the hinges but then I would need to reposition the track and buy all those hinges and rollers. Would probably be cheaper to replace the whole door (2 of them). The rollers are actually flush on the door at the center axis point.

You might try Mcmaster Carr, they usually have quite a selection and might have something similar. http://www.mcmaster.com/

As I stated above they only have with stems attached. They have plenty of bearings with 7/16 bore, but they have flat outer edges which will not track as well as those with curved surfaces. Weight and wear distribution on curved edges. I would have liked to have gotten them unattached, but drilling and punching them hasn't been that bad. I was just worried about damaging the races during the process.

Nope! Standard 2" with 4 inch stem. What I have managed to do is drill a hole into a nylon coated refrigerator car door guide and punch the stem out. So far it's all I've found with a true 7/16 bore. Seems like all the metal are around 13/32. Trying to drill or bore the hardened steel would be a bitch.

Call them up and tell them what you want and they just might be able to find something for you. We manufacture machinery and are often getting parts from venders that don't appear in their catalogs.

I just checked McMaster... They have cast iron caster wheels in 2" x 15/16" with a 1/4" bore (plain bore, no bearing). Should be easy enough to drill out to 7/16. Part # 2305T11.

I think with a sheet of Rulon® one could punch out or hole drill the inner & outer diameter and be done with it.

Charsley99,

What do the garage door service companies say about this? I found this site, for a nylon roller without shaft but with a /16" bore: http://www.wholesalebearing.com/guiderollers.html. Probably there are others.

Nycast® Nyloil® Green Plate, Tube, and Rod U.S. Plastic Corp.® has a great selection of Nycast® Nyloil® Green Plate, Tube, and Rod. Nycast® Nyloil® was developed to extend the wear-resistant properties of unlubricated or dry lubricated materials such as MoS2 filled nylons. Will last 5 to 7 times longer than unlubricated or MoS2 dry lubricated cast nylons. Lubrication results in 25% lower coefficient of friction. Exhibit more dimensional stability due to reduced moisture absorption. Internal lubricant provides for faster and easier machining than other nylons. Cut off a piece of the rod and drill a hole...

Thanks Guys. You gave me several options to consider. I was going to hole saw and drill Hy-fax and then round the edges to stay in the track, but some of these ideas may be better.
