Why don't you tell him how a relay works instead of insulting me, genius?

Hi Jayesh, I make a guess towards practicality. Although relays could be avoided and replaced with semiconductor solid state relays, going back to replace relays with switches should imply lots of different formats, weights and looks. Solid state relays "eat" also a little part of the voltage away. These less practical switches need a net of wires of all sizes and mostly a lot thicker than what is used now. With relays, less power losses are achieved, because wires can be kept shorter and that matters when you only have 12 volts to start with.

Jayesh, please do your googling first, then come to CR4.

This is an advanced forum. Use that link Lynlynch gave.

Ok Jayesh, considering comment#11 by a generous guest here, i will try to give a more amplified answer, not much different from those of others.

When you start the car, a large current is drwan by the motor to rotate the engine. This large current cannot be handled by the small key switch that you turn. Therefore, that key switch in turn operates a RELAY, whose main contacts do have the capability to handle that high current. It is a small electromagnetic device, which has a coil, which, when energised (by turning the key switch), moves a contact carrier which has large contacts capable of making, carrying and breaking the starter motor's current.

This is the best i can do. If you want still more info, please email me, let us not waste evereyone's time. (Though you seem to have made some people's day)

By the way, who changed the title? and corrected the typo ? CR4 admin? It should have been "Working" not "Wiring"

I beg to differ that this is "an advanced forum".

That distinction isn't in the site's title and it certainly isn't evidenced by the rude behavior of some of the "advanced" members.

Aside from general discussion, one of our main reasons for being here is to help others where possible and in turn ask for help when we need it. If we can't do so politely and with patience - even when we disagree - then we should exercise some discretion and remain silent.

i stand corrected, thank you.

It was triggered by the agony of watching a fellow countryman with an inadequate grasp of English asking inane questions(please check his other posts too) and being ridiculed. He asked for it though.

Sorry.

A relay basically just controls a large current with a small current
