GPS/pull sensor

05/26/2010 4:28 PM

I'm a student at Michigan State University doing research for a professor. We are looking to take position and force readings simultaneously at around 5-10 Hz. Currently we are using a HL 2x8 Field Mate 3000 psi cylinder with a Omega PX305-5KI Pressure Transducer which is the connected to a Omega DP41-S-DC strain gage meter which going into a Trimble Ranger via a serial cable. The Ranger is getting position reading via Bluetooth from a Trimble ProXT receiver. Currently we have this running on Trimble's TerraSync software, but the fastest it will stream is 1Hz (1 point per sec) and normally it makes you take points manually which we cant do. We would like to have this system stream data automatically. This is intended for tillage demonstrations. If anyone knows of a software we could use to make this work, or any other type of solution it would be greatly appreciated. I have been looking around and found some papers published where people have did similar things, but I haven't had much luck figuring out what software they used.

Thanks,

It looks like your GPS receiver's update rate is only 1Hz. There are many receivers out there that run faster than 1Hz, but you'll presumably have to pay more for them. I believe Trimble makes some.

If you can find a unit that provides serial ASCII output, you can just capture the output with a relatively simple custom program or even an off-the-shelf terminal program like HyperTerminal - you can capture text to a file. If you want to broadcast your data in real-time, then you've got more work to do.

The geeks in your school's Computer Science or IT department should be able to help.
