ASME Welding Rod A Number?

05/27/2010 12:23 AM

Hi, i would like to find out what is the "A" number in ASME IX for welding rods? I believe that the "F" number are classified by the welding rod materials and their ease of use. But I am not sure what the "A" number is for and why it is needed? Thank you.

Weld metal analysis has been classified in the form of A-numbers which is an essential variable for WPS with SMAW / GTAW processes. It is different from F-number in a sense that F-number is mainly a representative of ease of use of a specific welding rod but A-number represents as-welded chemical composition. Refer to ASME Sec. IX QW-442 for A-numbers listing.

your explanation for A-Number was very nice & easy to understand, but i have one doubt.whether it is applicable for SMAW/GTAW processes or for all welding processes?

ASME A Numbers
These refer to the chemical analysis of the deposited weld and not the parent material. They only apply to welding procedures in steel materials.

A1 Plain unalloyed carbon manganese steels.
A2 to A4 Low alloy steels containing Moly and Chrome Moly
A8 Austenitic stainless steels such as type 316.
