Portable Gantry Crane

05/27/2010 9:13 AM

I am considering building a gantry crane and want the lift capacity to handle 5,000lbs. I was wondering what size of I beam will be needed if it were to span 5 feet wide.

I had figured that a S10 x 25.4# would work for the cross beam, how far off am I in this calculation?

Down load this, Beamboy, I had used it often, including designing portable gantry cranes. Its quick and easy. That way you can design around what is available.

Come to think of it, the last one I design was for 5,000 lbs. Built (2) for moving a large catwalk.

I have the drawings to give you some ideas.

Hello Biggdadd58,

Your S10 x 25.4 should be more than sufficient to handle a 5 Kip load with 1.25 Impact Factor when loaded at mid-span of a 60-inch span. Make sure that you're using ASTM A36 Structural steel and prevent beam rotation at the supports.

Max. M = 93,750 in-# and Fb = 3,796 psi. Live load deflection wasn't checks, but should be more than acceptable. You can also save some money by buying a more readably available W10x19 or W10x22 beam (ASTM A36)!!!!

BTW, I was going to build a gantry crane myself to aid in lifting my 1.75 ton steel roof trusses that I'm presently fabricating for my 2-story tool shed!!!

You can also check out the Northern Tool Company for an extensive line of factory manufactured Gantry Cranes (most are adjustable)of all types, capacities and sizes.....can also be found on Ebay too.

Thank you for the input. I will check the pricing on those beams as well.
