Interior lining of steel penstock

Hello everybody:

For a hydroelectric power station, when the penstock (pressurized water pipe) thickness is calculated, one of the parameters taken into account is the so called "corrosion allowance"; that is an amount of millimeters added to the plate thickness calculated on a strength of material basis.

It is intended that this corrosion allowance will cover the pipe material lost during a good part of the power plant operative life.

I would like to know the criteria followed to apply an interior lining (coating) to the penstock instead of selecting a pipe with a greater plate thickness.

As a matter of fact, I can not avoid to think that the answer has to do with the conveyed water quality, the costs for the paint and manpower for the paint application, the cost of plates with extra thickness, etc., but, even so I will appreciate any comments.

If a standard or technical specifications is available to support the decision to choose, please let me know.

I am not from the related field and still taking the liberty to reason it out. My reply may be off topic. A higher thickness pipe / plate would always exposed to corrosive as well as abrasive water quality (even after one layer is taken away). When a coating is provided, it has special adhesive, anti corrosive and anti abrasive property. The life of this coating and therefore the life of pipe plate would pay more than the cost of extra thick pipe / plate. Overall life span would also play an important role.

Dear Eleman,

In a conservative design, 2mm corrosion allowance was considered. But with the present technology available, anticorrosion paint is very good. Even allowing a corrosion thickness of 2mm, anticorrosion paint is being used.

You have not mentioned where the project is coming up. In my experience, in the himalayan region in North India, there is lot of silt in the water. Even using stilling basin , silt filter etc., it is not possible to eliminate the silt in the penstock altogether and the penstock is subjected to cavirtation and corrosion. Whereas in South India, (Deccan Plateau), the water is silt free. Penstocks and turbines inspected after 25 years of operation were found to be damage free due to cavitation and corrosion

My suggestion is, please get the water analyzed and check up the latest coating available in the market. I don't have the list of coating available with me presently, but I'll try and give it to you in a week's time

Depending on the depth of your pockets, and the anticipated water pressure, you might wish to cinsider some type of Tetra-Flouro-Ethylene material (Teflon comes to mind). Another thought is Fiberglass with an Aramid lining for ballistic resistance. Due consideration should be given to joint design because TFE doesn't like elevated temperaturs, found in welding. Neither does Fiberglass; although, with sea-water cooling, we have used Fiberglass for exhaust pipe on boats.

Teflon coating has been recommended by hydro generating unit manufacturers, but its performance is not proven. I have seen damages to turbine and penstocks due to cavitation and silt, where the damage was enormous and had to undergo massive renovation works. In one case, the turbine was beyond repair and had to be replaced. I haven't come accross fiberglass protection. Have they been used in penstock where the velocity of flow can go upto 35ft/ sec? Please let me know where they have been used and how is its performance
