Leadscrew

05/31/2010 9:14 PM

What is the meaning of a leadscrew

As I understand is a screw whose pitch differ from the nut pitch , so by it, it make a self locking device.

I seen it in a screw used in hand guns, it specified

UNS 0.1500 502a.

Please any could explain it?

Gabriel.

Where the nut engages the screw, their pitches must be identical. However, if the nut (or more accurately bushing) has an outer thread of different pitch that engages a third female-threaded element, then various fine-adjustment vernier mechanisms can be done, as well as locking schemes.

The term "leadscrew" also refers to the screw on a lathe that advances the cutting tool a specific distance per revolution, such as for cutting threads.

A leadscrew is also sometimes called a translation screw. Examples are square thread forms and Acme thread forms. They are used when a high degree of precision is required. Like previously stated they are commonly found on lathes and such like.

There is plenty of information on Acme and stub acme thread forms on the web and if you can find a bench vice there will more than likely be an Acme threaded rod which "translates" the rotational movement to linear movement.

Now I understand about the LEAD screw as use at machines.

We call here TORNILLO PATRON using PATRON the same as in METRO PATRON.

Or used as reference.

Beside it , where I can find data about this screw ?

UNS 0.1500 50 2A

It is used to fix the grips in a handgun.

Any edition of Machinery's Handbook gives lots of information about screw threads.

This book is available from Amazon.com, in several editions, some new and some used. The most recent edition is the 29th; for your purposes a used copy of say the 27th would be less expensive.

It is a very useful reference, as are the Marks manuals on engineering.

For those interested in ACME threads for "translation" and Plastic Tooling stories - we had a discussion on "ACME threads and Diamond Dust" at "Skippy and Buzz" -

http://skippyandbuzz.blogspot.com/2010/04/of-acme-threads-and-diamond-dust.html

Good Luck -

Jim
