The test I am familiar with is for a vacuum leak in a condenser, The helium is injected in suspect areas and the vent from the air ejector is monitored for the helium. This application is fairly straight forward because the outlet ultimately has to be the vent.
You could also use this test in other systems by charging the system and sampling the various valves and components of the system. The drawback would be that the helium could be in many places, soap suds could be as effective.
In a single valve you could test for packing leakage directly, testing the valve in a system will depend on the configuration.
