IF A MOTOR DESIGNED FOR DELTA CONNECTION CONNECTED IN STAR

1.THIS CANNOT GET A STARTING TORQUE AS TORQUE IS PROPORTIONAL TO vOLTAGE.IN THIS CASE THE VOLTAGE WILL BE REDUCED AS El=1.732Ep.

2.THE MOTOR WINDING WILL GET OVERHEATED ,AND IF IT CONTINUES FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD THE WINDING WILL GET DAMAGED.

  • To connect a motor in star you must have access to all six leads. This is to enable the motor to be started in star and after it has accelerated to almost full speed, change it over to delta. This is to prevent disturbances to the incoming power line.
  • If the motor is designed to run normally in delta, it may draw 6-8 times the rated current if started dol. If started in star, it will draw only 2 x fla, and develop only 1/3 the torque which it would have developed if started dol.
  • If this torque is unable to accelerate the motor and its load to rated speed, it will see a 'locked-rotor' situation. Normally, the thermal or electronic overload relay will trip and protect the motor. If a relay is not there, motor can burn out.

You can connect but

(1) The motor should have the provision to connect both Star and Delta connection

(2) You have to supply √3 times more voltage to the motor terminal to get the motor rated torque.

The previous thread http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/54100 also will help.
