Product Review - Garbage Disposal, Kitchen Sink

06/07/2010 10:51 AM

Greetings CR4 Members,

There have been quite a few threads about poor product quality. One of the most memorable ones invoked a lot of passion in some forum members. It seems that the majority of us that hang out in Conference Room 4 realize the importance of quality and are willing to spend a little more for something that will last exponentially longer.

Most consumer reviews do not delve deeply into technical and design aspects of the components. Being that this is a forum for the technical community, what better place to address those areas of product reviews?

For easy future reference, a standard naming convention should be used for threads related to product reviews. My thought is they should start with... well... "Product Review" and then list the product in question.

Also, for the members that have been around for quite some time, you may recall other threads about a particular product. Please feel free to link them to their associated review for cross referencing. It would be nice to develop a series of threads, with a similar naming convention, that provide a nice starting point for product reviews.

As I am currently in the market for a Kitchen Sink Garbage Disposal, I figured that would be a good place to start. It should be stated that I live in the US, so will be looking for items usable on a US Power Grid, but that should not limit the products suggested and reviewed as our membership covers the world over.

So, what say you CR4? What are your recommendations and reviews for Garbage Disposals? The good and the bad... suggested ones to consider and warnings for those to stay away from.

It is indeed a pity that 'europium' seems to have disappeared .. it says "User deleted" .. can't make out what that means and why. My avatar is sort of gifted through one of his good posts as pointed out by Tornado in one of mine.

Well, coming to the point, i am all for a "Product review" .. but the key question is .. how good are the reviewers? Granted that they will be experts in their fields, how unbiased will their opinions be ? How many would risk their jobs disagreeing with the popular view (perhaps dictated by financial considerations)?

The key is that the OWNER of the business should be a quality nut. Akio Morita comes to mind, as would the Tata family members in India....

However, most such companies have bitten the dust .. Rolls Royce, Jaguar ... Westinghouse...

Anyway, enough of rambling .. GREAT IDEA for CR4

Europium

withdrew voluntarily, citing the need to use his time more productively [ make money]

I never noticed much difference in garbage disposals

Grind up some ice or citrus peels from time to time if it starts to smell bad

avoid grease or meat scraps, which are bad for the pipes & treatment plant...

To chop up into tiny bits any solids that may be headed down the sink drain. Granted, the majority of kitchen scraps can be composted. But, even the most frugal of recyclers occasionally have need of this device.

Thanks,

I'm in the UK so we dont tend to have those units over here. I was wondering whether you could just use composting instead but I suppose that there are some situations where that isnt possible.

Yeah, I use to have a composting pile but as a result of severly negitive financial impacts over the past year and a half, I no longer own my home or its multipule acres.

I now live in a mobile home on a very small rented lot and my compost pile is now a small composting box which is filling up. Hence, why I'm looking into a garbage disposal.

About a month ago I spoke with the owner of the mobile home park and asked if he'd consider changing a back, currently empty, lot into a community composting pile. He didn't like that idea. Something to do with odor and rodents. My rebuttle was then asking him why some of the residents were allowed... he didn't like that either, haha.

I'm trying to look into which has the least impact... excess kitchen scraps into a landfill or into a water treatment facility. But have found nothing to-date that proves one to be a lesser evil than the other.

So, back to the original topic, I am looking into a garbage disposal. And, having never owned one previously, I'm looking for some recomendations.

The recent development of me having to significantly minimize has brought to light a realization that those in the low income brackets face more challenges related to many things, one of them being recycling. Apartment dwellers can't start a compost pile in their kitchen, mobile home parks, such as mine dont even have recycled goods pick up; we have to walk our trash to a hopper at the end of the street.

So, there are some interesting challenges I see having to deal with as I get use to this new living standard.
