Dell Streak Smartphone

06/08/2010 6:46 AM

I am wondering if anyone has used the new Dell Streak smartphone?

I am looking to change my Blackberry for a new phone in the next month or so. In looking around i happened to see the Dell Streak which seems to be quite good but i was wondering if anyone out there had some personal experience of it?

I haven't used it personally, but I would highly recommend you examine the product first before you buy it. It's a huge device. It won't fit in your pocket unless you're secretly MC-Hammer. I guess its not much bigger than the new Evo 4G on sprint, but IMO they are both huge phones and you won't catch me with a man bag to carry it around.... Ever.....

Thanks, I will be giving it a proper check out before deciding but its useful to have other angles!

I am in the uk so it will be on o2 if i get it and i dont know what the Evo 4G is but the dell does seem to be rather large which is a little worrying.

I figured you were in the UK because you can only get the Streak in the US right now for 500 U.S. Dollars unlocked, no carrier has picked it up here yet. Are you anti Iphone? A new iphone is coming to the UK at the end of the month I believe. I've used an Iphone and loved it, though there are obviously drawbacks. The company thats been making a ton of smart phones flooding the market is HTC. I'd say any HTC phone with android 2.1 or 2.2 is a sure bet.

I'm not anti-iphone but i am a slight sceptic on it. Everyone says it is great and that maybe so but the price does somewhat put me off. Also I am not sure I want to follow the crowd.

I must admit that my other thoughts apart from a new Blackberry was an HTC. Looking at there new offerings i did think that they looked rather good and I am told that they are great to use too.

I am really not sure at the moment tho!

Don't be worried about the hype around Iphone. I'm not a fan of apples computers at all (sometimes 2:1 mac to pc price ratio for the same products), but they sure did it right with Iphone. I loved it. Everything you could want in a portable all in one device. Sadly, in the US only 1 carrier has it and it isn't mine, so I was using it on wifi, pretty much like an Ipod touch. When the 4g iphone comes out, see if the price drops on the 3g. Either way would work nicely. If you don't want to go iphone, just make sure it has Android. Windows mobile 6.5 is a joke and there aren't many windows phone 7 devices out yet. I know Vodafone has the Nexus One (made by htc, android, 1ghz processor), however you said you were looking at o2. Good luck, don't be shy if you want anymore of my input.

Personal choice, but larger isn't always more lovable.
The tablets are going (IMO) to have a hard sell in that they could
be a bridge too far in size. The Dell it seems has hedged its bets?

Or to put my wallet where my mouth is, I have just had a HTC HD2
and, it does everything I ask for, reasonably well. (recommended.)
Remotely view security cameras, financial pages, email, internet, 5mp
camera, music library, with a push, it even performs as a mobile phone!

The main thing is... it's in my pocket. Size and usefulness is a difficult
balance. I really like the very small phones, which unobtrusively slide into
a small space, hide unnoticed until needed, and perform one function well.

The smart phones, with all their additional functions, sacrifice this beauty
until it no longer exists. At what point you cease to like it is personal choice.

Not much about the Dell (sorry) all can be found online; hope this helps.

jt.

I had a few words with the wife; she had a few paragraphs with me.

Thanks for the info jt.

I am really seriously thinking about an HTC at the moment but not sure what model yet although will probably be one of the higher end models.

I do know what you mean about larger not always being better and tablets such as the ipad will not be getting my money as i cant see a point to them. The Dell does seem to be hedging its bets somewhat. I only hope it works well as a phone!

I do want something that does fit in my pocket and something that it is difficult to accidentally dial as that is a little problem with the blackberry.

I like everything about the HTC HD2 except the os. Come on, windows 6.5? Horrible. I've had a phone with windows 6.5 and it left such a bad taste in my mouth. However, that phone is a power house and I'm sure handles everything you throw at it. At 4.74 inches long and 2.64 inches wide, its still a little too large for my tastes, but obviously people like it or you wouldn't see phones like HTC EVO 4G, HD2 or dell streak popping up all over the place. No murse (man purse = murse) for me to carry my phone around....ever. If my lifestyle was a little different I could see myself using a large device like the dell streak as my mobile. In an office for 8 hours a day I think I'd love my media on that baby and the docking station you can buy for it is very nice. HDMI out....so nice. I feel like its more a competitor for the Ipad then the Iphone.

Personally I am not too bothered with the OS as long as it works ok. I would prefer something that is a bit more open than the apple system and the same goes for the battery on the iphone. (Its one thing that really bugs me about apple is that to change a battery I have to pay to get someone to do it for me).

I do spend quite a bit of time at my desk and do listen to an ipod while i am working but something different would be rather nice! It would also be a lot easier if I have to travel for work! But thats not too bad as long as I am not taking the train! I think that you are right that the Streak is going to be a big competitor not only to the iphone but also to the ipad!

You can change the Iphone battery, is just a pain in the arse. You have to open up the phone, but its not so bad.

We maybe you can change an iphone battery but if i want to change a battery i want something that is easy to do! I dont know about the ipod but that battery appears to be sealed in place! i wish sometimes it would be a bit easier to change!
