The "Former" is the piece of the tool, that the pipe is forced against to make the bend.

You need various size formers to deal with different sizes of pipe or tube.

When you bend a pipe, especially where you carry out short bends, the pipe bender has the necessary tools that hug the profile of the pipe as it gets bent.

Inside you will have a wheel with the half radius cut (called Die or shoes) and the outside tool (called follower or rollers) that follows the pipe as it moves through the die has the other half of it, with corerct radii formed along with the end clamps.

Due to this the kink formation and collapse of the pipe is minimised during the cold bending operation.
