Opening a PDF in the Correct Orientation

06/10/2010 9:57 AM

Hi all

When I do concept drawings, they are normally landscape and are printed from my CAD program using deskPDF. I then attach the PDF to an email. When these attachments are opened they always need to be rotated from portrait back to landscape. Is there any way to ensure they open in the correct orientation.

Thanks Tony

Glad to hear someone is thinking of the recipient!

Most of the drawings I get have to be rotated. It isn't a big issue, but it is nice when they come in the right orientation :-)

One way, mind you, maybe not the most elegant - but it will work - is to download the free PDF tools program (don't worry, you can trust this anonymous poster that the program is safe from any malware/viruses )

and rotate the page, or pages as the case may require

Hi,

How about building a 3rd party PDF reader to help open and read PDF files? I am learning about it these days. Any ideas? I want to customize its features accoring to my own favors. Thanks in advance.

Best regrads,

Arron

Hi arronlee

I've recently downloaded Foxit, free, but there is a better version with bells and whistles.

Not quite sure I fully understand the problem here.

But one solution may be to download open office.

Start a new text document
Format
Page...
O Landscape
Margins........1...Tab...1...Tab...1...TAB...1...

Insert (Alt+I), picture (U), From file (CR)
Browse and select picture ***
File
Save AS
Filename
File
Export As pdf...

Choose options (you might want to experiment with options in "Initial View" and "User Interface")
Export
Browse, Filename, Save

Blimey: that looks difficult, it isn't.

*** Of course you need a landscape version of the picture in jpg or other format. If you can't find any other way there's always a screen capture package like Screen Capture And Print

I'm sure you can do the same thing in recent versions of MS Word (if you're some kind of masochist).

Hi all

Maybe showing in pictures would explain better. This is a picture before printing:

This is the same picture printed to PDF, opened in Adobe Reader 9 which most people have, I know I can rotate it, but it would be nice if my client didn't have to.

Screen dump of Adobe Reader 9 showing open PDF, silly isn't it!

I think the problem is in whatever you're using to print to pdf.

This is a jpg of a rectangular screen capture of a pdf created in the way I described:-

I just checked some of my sent mail & all of the PDFs printed as landscape stay in landscape when opened from the e-mail, they open in Acrobat. The PDFs were created using the free CutePDF programme.

I've never really thought about this because they have always come out right.

Hi,

The solution is in the Custom Properties screen of the programme you use to make the pdf's. Make sure that you select the correct orientation here and it should be ok. I haven't used deskpdf but this works for Cutepdf and Adobe.

Her is a screen shot of the Cutepdf screen, the Adobe version is very similar.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem but I found a solution.

Open the pdf file you've created in Acrobat.

Then go to:

Document > Rotate Pages > and rotate the page to the orientation you want it to show and hit okay. (shortcut is ctrl+shift+r)

Save the file and voila! Next time you open the file, it should be in the orientation you want.

Don't use the right click option (shift+ctrl+plus) and rotate it to what you want. You can't save the file to open in the correct orientation.
