Measuring Plastic threads on Parting Line?

06/10/2010 10:02 AM

We have a debate going on here at work. The debate involves measurement of thread. Some people are measuring 5 degrees off parting line so as to not include flash and some are measuring right on the flash. Any ideas or reason why it should be done either way is greatly appreciated.

1. What does your specification say? This is obviously an issue and should be covered in the inspection criteria.

2. Why would you measure an unfinished part? Measure flash? Will you ship parts with flash? Trim flash, then measure.

3. Most importantly, why would you produce parts with flash, or even a mismatched parting line? GET YOUR TOOLING/PROCESS FIXED SO YOU AREN'T MOLDING JUNK.

Thank you for the information first off. I will answer as best I can so we can continue this discussion.

We are allowed up to .005" flash in some instances. There is no specification for measuring with this flash or not it is a method or reasoning issue that I haven't seen any documentation on as to a standard.

We manufacture goods that go into the finished assembly and also do tool changes etc... on the parts. Trimming flash on the parting line of threads is absolutely not an option due to thread damage etc....

Ideally we would like to "fix" all the flash or mismatches but do not have capital or means to redesign tools and as I stated are allowed up to .005" flash or mismatch in many cases.

Thanks again and hope to hear back soon!!!

Practically speaking, is the part functional with .005 flash/mismatch?

If it doesn't affect the three F's, form, fit or function, use it.
