Chilled Water Application

06/14/2010 2:58 AM

Hi

There is issue in chilled water circuit, we have intemittent load on chillers, for buffer we have one hot well where chilled water comes from process and than passed through chiller and stored in Cold well from where it is pumped to process as and when need arise.

The issue is sometimes it has been observed that water from hot well is flowing into the cold well thereby raising the temperature of cold well. What can be done to avoid this problem.

Regards

Munish

It is always better to have common tank with cold well and hot well partitioned. When you have the secondary pumps higher than the primary pump the water coming into hot well is more thus it overflows in to cold well.

This happens in most of the Pharma companies weher the pumps are not fine tuned to the reuquirement. The chiller requires constant flow and should be with separate pump from Hot well.

The hot well shall be sized for 1/3 and cold well with 2/3 so that it is designed to overflow from cold well to hot well so that the chiller can unload based on the load variation.

In your case your pump to process must be bigger than primary chilled water pump for chiller. You may provide a globe valve or balancing valve at the hot water to hot well so that it can be regulated . Best way is to size the secondary chilled water pump based on the flow required across the process, then the issue of over flow from hot to cold will get resolved.

In case the above suggestions will take time you may connect the chilled water pipe from chiller out let to the suction header of the process so that you get the temperature you require.
